“Pores” is a commonly used word in the beauty industry.
I’m sure you’ve heard many products claim they “won’t clog pores” or that they “help minimize pores.” But what exactly are they? And why do we want to minimize them and keep them clean? Well, we’re hear to tell you everything you need to know!
To start, a pore is the opening of a hair follicle and has a very important job. It allows oil to generate and keep your skin healthy and moisturized. When the pore becomes clogged, it can no longer do its job and results in acne. Because of this, you want to make sure your pores are working properly and don’t get blocked by products, dead skin, etc. To do this, you need to clean your skin every single night. That’s right – EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Even if you didn’t wear makeup that day, you still have dirt and build up from natural causes.
Some people feel they have huge pores, and while there are ways to make them appear smaller, you can never permanently change your pore size – so don’t be fooled by fake products that claim to do so.
You may have also heard that you can open and close your pores, but this isn’t true. “Pores are not muscles,” explains Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse, a dermatologist and clinical instructor at the University of Southern California. “Hot water and steam will not open your pores, and cold water will not close them. A quick, cool rinse before popping out of the shower will definitely leave your skin looking less pink (it will close the blood vessels), but it won’t change your pore size.”
To sum it all up, take care of your pores! The best way to do this is to wash your skin, exfoliate, use natural products, and give your skin some time to breath.
